MacDonald Ranch was developed by the MacDonald family, with land assembled beginning in the early 1980s and the master plan entitled in 1993-94. Described at the time as Southern Nevada's first hillside community, it sits along the eastern foothills edge of Green Valley, near Green Valley Ranch, in the foothills of the McCullough range.

Rather than being uniformly guard-gated, MacDonald Ranch is a mixed-density area where specific sub-communities — including The Canyons at MacDonald Ranch, Midnight Ridge, and the age-restricted Sun City MacDonald Ranch — have their own gating, while the broader area includes a mix of housing types and some commercial development.

MacDonald Ranch is distinct from MacDonald Highlands, a separate guard-gated community (home to DragonRidge Country Club) that was originally developed as "Village III" of the same MacDonald family master plan before being branded independently.
